People we've helped - Tara

The Legion will be needed for as long as people continue to be affected by conflict. We're there to support those who have been prepared to make a personal sacrifice through serving in the British Armed Forces, like those below.

Tara's Northern Ireland Troubles 1996-2001

Tara Robertson, in ServiceAt 22, Tara was enjoying life as a serving soldier and looking forward to the future. A terrorist bomb changed that. It killed one of her comrades instantly and left Tara fighting for her life.

After emergency surgery, Tara was told that she would have to have a metal plate fitted in her skull. Her eyesight had been so severely damaged that she would never see properly again.

Later, Tara made the brave decision to return to Northern Ireland to continue her tour of duty. But she hadn’t realised how bad her eyesight was, nor how deep her psychological scarring went. Tara had to ask for a discharge. It was the saddest day of her life.

Tara RobertsonAfter she left the Army, Tara found she didn’t have the correct War Disablement Pension. So the Legion stepped in to help her.

We fought for her to receive her full War Disablement Pension and compensation for her injuries.

We also helped her make plans for a new career. Tara’s confidence began to return. She has now qualified as a counseller and helps at a local college as a learning support worker, helping students who have additional learning needs.
